Artist Statement
As an artist, my objective is to make art that is both revealing and mysterious, but which also acts as a muse for the viewer, one that inspires memory, providing intellectual and visual stimulation.
I gather my inspiration from my childhood, nature, people, books, dreams, or unexpected emotions. I create in series on different themes, working predominantly in photography and mixed media. Using Acrylic Mediums, silicone transfers, oil pastels, and resin. I work with simple forms found in nature and rely heavily on texture and color.
I find that the challenge in creating mixed media artworks comes when the artist sees something beyond the surface of the subject matter. The successful execution of techniques in mixed media is only a matter of practice. The real challenge is to bring out what is beyond the surface, whether it is the feeling or the character. Once it is discovered and unearthed from the depth of the surface, then the artwork is complete.
My artwork relies heavily on symbolism using emphasis with words, birds, trees, and the sky. Trees have long held a literal and symbolic fascination for humanity while the bird represents freedom and beauty. In addition to symbolism, I love working with a thick textural surface and mixing a variety of mediums together to create a unique art piece.
“It is what we imagine knowledge to be: dark, salt, clear, moving, utterly free, drawn from the cold hard mouth of the world, derived from the rocky breasts forever, flowing and drawn, and since our knowledge is historical, flowing, and flown.” – Elizabeth Bishop
